How to use Footnotes & Endnotes in Word Document:

Writers use footnotes & endnotes in documents to explain, comment on or provide reference to something. Usually Footnotes appears at the bottom of the page and it contains extra information, clarification while Endnotes appears at the bottom of the document or section and it consist on some reference or citation.

Add a Footnote:

You need to click within your document where you want to insert footnote.

·        Click References > Insert footnote.

·        Word inserts a reference mark in text & adds footnote mark on the bottom of page.

·        Now add the footnote text.       

Add an Endnote:

Endnotes in Word Document

·        Click where you want to add an endnote.

·        Click References > Insert endnote.

·        Word inserts a reference mark in text & adds endnote mark at the bottom of document.

·        Type endnote text.       

Customize your footnotes & endnotes:

You have many options to customize footnotes & endnotes.      

·        Click References and then click the small arrow to open the footnote and endnote box.

·        In opening of above box, select your options which you want to change before clicking on Insert button.

·        To choose where you want to put footnote. Click on footnotes > below text or bottom of the page.

·        To choose where you want to put endnote. Click on endnotes > End of document or End of section.

·        To change Format of numbers for your footnotes or endnotes, click footnotes or endnotes and choose the numbers, marks or symbols.

·        To restart footnotes or endnotes numbering, click footnotes or endnotes then click on Restart each section.

·        Now last step is where you want to make changes in document.

·        Click Apply changes list > this section or whole document.

·        Then click on Apply button.
